Upscale LA Mall Charges High Fee for Kids to See Santa
Parents in Los Angeles are facing a significant financial burden this Christmas as a ritzy shopping mall demands up to 5 for their kids' visits with Santa. In an era of inflation, holiday expenses are on the rise, and this mall is no exception. The Westfield at Century City is selling timed-entry passes to their Santa's North Pole Adventure, with prices ranging from 9 to 5.

Elf Pass: A 9 Affair

Parents are urged to reserve ahead for the Elf Pass, as slots are filling up quickly, especially on weekends. With this pass, kids get a dedicated three minutes with Santa in his bungalow. It may seem like a small amount of time, but it comes at a cost. The remaining time is spent in a Christmas village with a scavenger hunt, a postcard station, and more decorations for photo ops.During this time, kids can enjoy the festive atmosphere and create memories. However, it's important to note that there is no arranged photographer for any packages, and selfies are encouraged. This adds an element of spontaneity to the experience but may also lead to less-than-perfect photos.

Reindeer Express: At 5

The Reindeer Express pass costs 5 and offers a similar experience to the Elf Pass. Kids still get their three minutes with Santa, along with the opportunity to explore the Christmas village. The added value of this pass may be the sense of exclusivity it provides, as it allows kids to feel like they are part of a special journey with Santa's reindeer. While the cost may be a shock to some parents, the mall's senior general manager, Louis Schillace, has called it a "one-of-a-kind" event. He notes that the 1.3 million square foot shopping center underwent a billion renovation in 2017, which truly transformed the holiday experience.

VIP Pass: The 5 Experience

For those willing to spend the most, the VIP pass costs 5 and grants access to "Santa's Inner Circle." In addition to the dedicated three minutes with Santa, kids receive complimentary cookies and "elves will prioritize your group's check-in." This added luxury makes the VIP pass a popular choice among parents who want to give their kids a truly special experience. However, the exorbitant cost and stringent rules have not deterred the masses. SFGate reported lines around the block when the attraction first opened last week, and the reduced rates for visits before Dec. 6 may have contributed to the popularity.Overall, the Westfield at Century City's Santa encounter is a unique and expensive holiday event. While it may not be for everyone, it offers a memorable experience for kids and parents alike. The mall's transformation in 2017 has truly elevated the holiday season, making it a must-visit destination for those looking for a high-end shopping and holiday experience.
