Argument Escalates into Deadly Confrontation
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the incident began when 27-year-old Aaliyah Ross was engaged in an argument with her boyfriend inside their home. Seeking to defuse the situation, the boyfriend, who is the father of the 16-month-old child, decided to step outside with the toddler to calm down. However, the situation took a dark turn when the boyfriend threw a cinder block at Ross' car, further enraging the already volatile situation.
A Mother's Deadly Rampage
Fueled by anger, Ross then placed two other children, a 4-year-old and a 6-month-old, in her car before getting behind the wheel. Disregarding the safety of her own family, she "lunged" her car towards her boyfriend and the 16-month-old, running them both over. The horrific incident did not end there, as Ross continued to drive, crashing her car into a neighbor's house.
A Wounded Child Left Alone
After the crash, Ross allegedly grabbed her wounded son and took him back to her home, leaving him there alone while she fled to her sister's residence in Orlando. The boyfriend, who had been treated for injuries at the hospital, returned home to retrieve the child and take him for further medical attention.
Charges and Consequences
Aaliyah Ross was later arrested by the Orange County Sheriff's Office and faces a slew of charges, including simple domestic battery, hit-and-run resulting in property damage, aggravated battery, child neglect without bodily harm, and aggravated child abuse. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd described Ross as a "crazy woman" and expressed his outrage at her actions, stating that she had "clearly violated all kinds of laws of the state of Florida."
A Child's Devastating Injuries
The 16-month-old child suffered numerous injuries, including a broken left shoulder and collarbone, broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung, and various abrasions and bruises. He remains hospitalized in Tampa, fighting for his life. The boyfriend, who was also struck by the vehicle, was treated for bruising to his lungs and body and has since been released from the hospital.
Ongoing Investigation and Custody Concerns
The Florida Department of Children and Families is currently evaluating the custody plan for the other two young children involved in the incident. The investigation into the tragic events is ongoing, and authorities are working to uncover the full extent of the circumstances that led to this devastating act of violence. This heartbreaking case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the urgent need for greater awareness and support for families in crisis. As the community grapples with the aftermath, the focus remains on the well-being of the injured child and the pursuit of justice for this senseless act of cruelty.
